Lovers' Quarrel, 2018(L) Lovers’ Quarrel (1-30), 2018, acrylic on photographic inkjet prints, dimensions varied
(R) I’m Yours, 2016, ring box, 8BG USB, 30 nude photos courtesy of the artist created over 3 years, dimensions varied Lovers' Quarrel was made for the exhibition Disobedient Daughters curated by Sophia Cai. Lovers' Quarrel builds on the 2016 work I'm Yours, and both works were exhibited alongside each other. Lovers' Quarrel expands on I'm Yours, taking all of the images on the USB and bringing them into physical printed form, yet Mullens obstructs the body with black paint in each image, negating the gaze through overpainting. Using her own personal experiences Mullens questions stereotypes and the act objectification of Asian women that occurs on a larger scale, and looks at the how this plays out on a personal level. Mullens investigates her role and responsibilities as Asian woman in a predominantly Anglo society. Disobedient Daughters curated by Sophia Cai features nine female artists/artist collectives who challenge visual tropes of Asian women. The works playfully examine race, gender, and societal expectations, and their continued objectification and exoticism in popular media. Disobedient Daughters opened on April 4 2018 at Metro Arts Gallery, Brisbane. Artists featured: Mihyun Kang, Gwan Tung Dorothy Lau, Pixy Liao, Janelle Low, Andy Mullens, Ma Qiusha, Sad Asian Girls, Sancintya Mohini Simpson and Zoe Wong. Curated by Sophia Cai. Exhibition essay by Michelle Law.
