My Foreign Mother, 2011
Series of 8 inkjet prints from physical relief onto vintage photographs
Various sizes Taking photographs belonging to her mother of her family in Vietnam Mullens has scanned the images, re-printed them, then stitched, cut away and painted over them, and re-printed them again to create the final work. This re-working and layering of process is indicative of the layers of distance Mullens felt towards her family history. The obstruction of face and restriction of tactility reflects the disconnect Mullens saw between her family's stories and her own relationship to them.
